Doraha gas leak: Notice to Punjab

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday issued a notice to the Punjab gover nment on the Doraha (Ludhiana) ammonia gas leak incident in which five people were killed and 213 hospitalised last month.

The division bench of justice SK Mittal and justice HS Sidhu issued the notice acting on a citizen’s letter. On June 13, a tanker carrying liquid ammonia broke its safety valves in trying to pass under a low bridge at Doraha on the Delhi-Ludhiana highway. Within minutes, ammonia vapours had spread in the air in a 5-km radius, causing injuries to the respiratory tract, eyes and skin of the people living in the area. The department of health and the Ludhiana DC have been asked to submit responses by September 15.
