Rain fury in J-K, Himachal; 4 dead

JAMMU/SHIMLA: Four persons were killed as heavy rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pardesh, triggering landslides in several places on Wednesday.Two minor girls were washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains (157 mm) in Janipur area of Jammu. They have been identified as Meenakshi (9) and Sakshi Sharma (7).

JAMMU/SHIMLA: Four persons were killed as heavy rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pardesh, triggering landslides in several places on Wednesday.

Two minor girls were washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains (157 mm) in Janipur area of Jammu. They have been identified as Meenakshi (9) and Sakshi Sharma (7). “We have never seen such flash floods here. Vehicles parked in the lane were swept away. Rain water has inundated our houses,” said Surinder Gupta, a resident of Excelsior Lane in Jammu.

A flood alert was sounded after water in the Tawi river rose above the danger mark. Landslides resulted in the closure of the closure of 300-km long Jammu Srinagar national highway. Rains also lashed many parts of the Valley. In Himachal, a ‘kachha’ house collapsed in Sirmaur district leading to the death of two women and injuries to two others. The total number of people killed in rain-related incidents in the state has reached 20 this season.

Six workers of a company were also trapped near Manali following a landslide and were rescued with the help of the local administra­tion, authoritie­s said. One person was killed after being swept away by the swirling waters of Mandakini in Uttarakhan­d’s Rudrapraya­g district and heavy showers in Badkot area of Uttarkashi district washed away 3 houses.
