ROHTAK: Jhajjar resident Jeevni Devi, probably the oldest woman in Haryana, passed away at 108 years at her residence on Tuesday.

She was born in Amboli village of Rohtak district (now in Jhajjar district) in 1908. She was living with her youngest son, Khajan Singh, in Jhajjar’s Dadri Toi village.

Her family said she had stopped eating for the past few days and was on liquid diet. She breathed her last while her grandson was feeding her milk on Tuesday afternoon, Khajan said.

HT had last month interviewed her for feature on people over aged over 100 years in the region.

Even at 108 years, she was able to walk by herself and eat what she savoured the most- Halwa and Churma. Talking to HT, she had said, “I have grown up eating saag, bajre ki khichdi, halwa, churma, lassi and lots and lots of desi ghee. These children think desi ghee will make them fat… but ghee made of cow’s milk does no harm. During my childhood days, I would gulp down 250 gm desi ghee in one go.”

At the age of 16, Jeevni got married to Prahlad Singh, a freedom fighter, who died in 1986 at the age of 83. She had nine kids, out of which four died at young age due to high mortality rate during those times. Her eldest son, Maha Singh, died in 2010 of old age. Sitting on a ‘charpai’ under the shades of Neem tree, she liked spending her days talking to visitors and her great grandchildren. “I have seen seven generations of my family,” she had said. HTC
