US Congress honours Bengali association
A Bengali association’s Durga Puja celebrations have earned a rare honour from the US Congress this year. The Northern Virginia Bengali Association, the first such club on the East Coast, was formed more than 25 years ago. In recognition of it celebrating its silver jubilee Durga Puja this year, Congresswoman Barbara Comstock handed over a 25th anniversary plaque. NVBA’s name was mentioned on the floor of the House Chamber. “It is very rare for the US Congress to award a Congressional Record to an ethnic group, unless their contributions are significant,” said Debasis Basak, a patron of the association.
