8 months on, Karnal farmers await compensati­on for damaged crops

KARNAL: Eight months after their crop was damaged due to hailstorm, farmers of Indri block of Karnal district are still awaiting compensati­on even though the ground-level officials have already submitted the report on damaged crop.

“We do not know why they are not giving compensati­on, even after we have harvested another crop,” said Ishwar

Singh, a farmer of Hinori village.

“My three acres of tomato were damaged due to hailstorm and several officials had visited our village for girdawari but nothing has been given to us,” said Jaswinder Singh, another farmer.

When contacted, tehsildar of Indri, Naresh Kumar said, “We had conducted the girdawari to assess the damage to the crops and submitted the report to higher authoritie­s, but we have still not got any relief.”

Karnal district revenue officer Rajbir Dhiman said, “The matter is pending with the government and we had already submitted our report for the compensati­on.”

“Some questions related to the girdawari were raised by the government and we had submitted our reply,” he added.

Hailstorm had lashed parts of Karnal and Kurukshetr­a districts in April this year, damaging hundreds of acres of standing tomato and wheat crops in the region, the highest damage was reported from Indri block.
