HISAR: The district administration heaved a sigh of relief after Balidan Divas observed by the All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) passed off peacefully in Hisar on Sunday.

Heavy police and paramilitary force deployment was made to maintain law and order near Ramayan village, where Jats have been sitting on a dharna seeking reservation in central jobs and withdrawal of cases against those booked for the violent stir last year.

AIJASS state spokesperson Rambhagat Malik said about 20,000 persons, including a large number of women of the community, attend the Balidan Divas programme at Ramayan. Claiming the event got support from all khaps of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, he said similar crowds were seen at dharna sites in Rohtak, Sonepat, Jhajjar, Jind and Fatehabad.

‘RELIEF NOT ENOUGH’

Dubbing the compensation announced for innocent people injured in the 2016 quota stir “very low”, Malik said: “We have already assured everyone that our protest will be peaceful. The Haryana government is still spending crores on deploying paramilitary forces. It should consider giving at least ₹5 lakh to those injured during the agita- tion last February.”

Malik said there are about 60 people who received serious injuries during that stir and had to get admitted to private hospitals for treatment.

Warning to intensify the stir, Krishan Kirmara, president of the AIJASS Hisar district unit, said: “The government said it has withdrawn about 1,300 cases. But we came to know that these cases were against unidentified persons.”
