Truck union goes on strike at Attari, prevents lifting of Pak imports
AMRITSAR: The Attari Truck Union on Monday went on strike, not allowing truckers to lift imports from Pakistan at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) on the International Border near here.
The union staged a dharna on the road leading to the Attari railway station and disrupted movement of trucks towards the ICP. Although cops were present at the spot, they did not intervene, and were in fact seen directing the truckers to take a U-turn.
The union members are protesting against another group of transporters, who they accuse of overloading and charging less, causing losses to them.
“Some traders have become transporters and have dropped the rates. They are also indulging in overloading, which is a clear violation of rules,” said Shabeg Singh, president of the union. He said they will continue the strike till “the things are set right”.
India is mainly exporting plastic granules and cotton yarn to Pakistan these days, and receiving cement, gypsum and some other commodities from Pakistan. Customs officials said if the strike continues on Tuesday, it will affect trade with Pakistan.
