Alumni turn guiding force for Amritsar govt medical college
AMRITSAR “It feels great to pay back to our alma mater we are deeply attached to. Doing so gives us deep pleasure as we will be grateful to it always,” said Dr Satwant Singh, an alumnus of Government Medical College (1963 batch), who came from the US to attend the two-day international conference starting on Friday.
A founder member of Amritsar Medical and Dental Alumni Association of North America (AMDAANA), which, in collaboration with college authorities, is organising the meet, Dr Singh said, “Paying back to alma mater is an effort to motivate students of the college towards excellence.”
Notably, AMDAANA was formed in 1979 in the United States to connect alumni of the college and other dental colleges of Amritsar. “I wish students of this institution grow in the field of medical sciences and earning kudos to the holy city. On our part, we are doing efforts in this direction,” he told HT.
Dr Ajinder Singh, who is also an alumnus of the college and had come with Dr Satwant Singh, said , “Whenever I visit here, I feel a certain sense of homecoming We can see our students. I just want students studying here to excel.”
“They remind me of my days as a student. Under the AMDAANA Amritsar project, we keep on doing our bit with the help and guidance from the college authorities,” he said.
Members of the alumni body, along with college authorities, distributed 20 scholarships among the deserving students from graduation and post-graduation levels on the eve of the conference on Thursday. Cheques for ₹25,000 each were given to the students selected by college scholarship committee.
