JALANDHAR: Unidentified assailants shot dead a businessman’s wife, her daughter-in-law and her friend in the posh Lajpat Nagar locality of the city on Thursday evening.

The victims were identified as Daljeet Kaur, 60, her daughterin-law Paramjeet Kaur, 35, and friend Khushwinder Kaur, aka Neetu, 40, of Link Colony. Paramjeet received two bullets in her head and died during treatment in a private hospital.

The family owns two petrol pumps on Tanda road and near Chugitti, beside an industry in Sodal area of the city.

Ruling out robbery, police suspect the role of persons known to the family. The wire of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras was disconnected two days ago.

Police said assailants barged into the house around 5pm when the three women were in the house. The assailants locked door from inside and committed the crime. The accused also tried to show it as a robbery as clothes and other items were scattered on the bed and floor. Police, however, said no jewellery and valuables were missing from the house. Even the jewellery the women were wearing was not removed.

The assailants took the rear door, which usually remains locked, to flee, the police said.

The incident came to light when Daljeet’s grandson Shaanjeet came home after his tuition classes and rung the doorbell many times. Getting no reply, he called neighbours, who managed to break open the door and saw the women in bleeding profusely. The victims were rushed to nearby Oxford Hospital where Daljeet and Khushpreet were declared brought dead.

Police have seized shells o .32-bore revolver from the house.

A team led by police commis sioner Arpit Shukla reached the spot started investigation. A forensic team was called to col lect clues. “We are recording statements of neighbours,” said Shukla, ruling out robbery bid

It’s surprising how the assail ants managed to get keys of the rear gate to flee. It looks the handiwork of some insider.
