SANGRUR: Twelve days after the murder of a financier in Longowal’s main market, main accused gangster Davinder Singh alias Babli Randhawa surrendered before the court of judicial magistrate (first class) here on Tuesday. The court remanded him in police custody till March 8.

A 25-year-old financier, Hardev Singh Happy, was shot dead on February 16 by a group of five gangsters led by Randhawa, who later put up four videos on Facebook Live and gloated about having “avenged” his “insult”. People of the town had staged a protest at the police station after the bhog (memorial) ceremony of the victim on February 26.

“He fired and escaped from the spot. Due to police’s pressure, he surrendered before the court and the police got his remand. We are also tracing his aides,” said Jashandeep Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Sunam.

Randhawa had posted four videos on his Facebook page taking responsibility for the crime and celebrating the murder by joining the chorus of a song, “Maare hik vich fire Jatt ne (The Jat has fired in the chest)”. He was also seen flashing a gun in a video.

The killers had pumped five bullets into the head of Happy, then checked if he was dead, and celebrated with a dance near his body in broad daylight.
