Woman beats up husband at venue of his second marriage
LUDHIANA: It was a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie when a woman gatecrashed the venue of a marriage function and thrashed the groom, claiming to be his first wife. The groom, Vishal Kumar Sonu (42), a lesserknown singer, was beaten up in the middle of the road outside the wedding venue, a restaurant on Malhar Road, by Rakhi and her family members. She said her husband was solemnising second marriage to a woman 18 years younger to him, without divorcing her.
Police reached the spot and took the groom and his relatives to the Sarabha Nagar police station. Vishal, however, claimed that he had divorced his first wife and has documents to prove that.
Clad in a shervani, Vishal , along with guests was at the restaurant when Rakhi stormed in and started arguing with him. When Vishal said he didn’t know her, Rakhi and her family members thrashed him. His efforts to flee the spot went in vain. Rakhi and her relatives also thrashed the bride, Ritu of Shimlapuri.
After the unsavoury incident, the restaurant staff got the venue vacated.
Rakhi’s brother Pawan Kumar said Vishal married his sister 14 years ago and they have a 13-year-old son. The couple had strained relationship and Rakhi started living with her parents. He said Vishal was unemployed and used to thrash Rakhi over money.
“We took Rakhi back to our home and set a condition before Vishal that they will send her back only after he will start earning. Vishal agreed to this and used to visit Rakhi often. We never expected that he will solemnise second marriage. We came to know about his marriage two days ago, when someone showed us the wedding invitation,” he Pawan.
Sarabha Nagar SHO subinspector Mohan Lal said investigations were on and a report will be prepared and then sent to a court for further action.
Ritu’s family members said Vishal had told them that he was married and that he was living with his wife Rakhi for seven years. They said Vishal had shown them documents to prove that he had divorced Rakhi. They cursed Vishal for cheating and misleading them.
Vishal’s brother Vikas said his brother had not divorced his first wife. Vikas said he came to know about the second marriage two days ago and talked to Vishal over phone, cautioning him against the illegal step. The restaurant staff said Vishal had booked the hall for a birthday party.
The photographer told the police that he was hired to record a wedding anniversary function.
