2 groups clash over ‘ghurchari’ of Dalit youth in Karnal village

KARNAL: Tension gripped Saga village of Karnal district after members of two communitie­s allegedly clashed over ‘ghurchari’ (marriage procession) of a Dalit youth on Saturday.

According to the family members of the bridegroom, Somvir Singh, some people belonging to the “upper castes” objected to the use of disc jockey (DJ) during the ‘ghurchari’, which irked the Dalits, leading to a clash between the two groups.

However, the village elders called the police which controlled the situation.

A policeman was injured in the incident.

Karnal deputy commission­er (DC) Mandeep Singh Brar and superinten­dent of police (SP) Jashandeep Randhawa also reached the village and asked the villagers to sort out the issue amicably at the panchayat level. On the persuation of the officers, the issue was sorted out amicably.

Taking to HT, the deputy commission­er said police deployment has been made in the village and a duty magistrate has been appointed to monitor the situation.

The DC has also warned the villagers that strict action will be taken against those found indulging in violence.

Karnal SDM Yogesh Kumar said the situation is under control.

Taraori police station in-charge Baksha Singh said the police reached the village and took the situation under control. He said the police have started investigat­ions and those involved in the clash will be booked.
