Let us learn to be receptive to what God sends us

We pray to God because we want a certain type of blessings, the ones we consider to be blessings. We often miss out on or disregard the blessings that God sends unasked. We include an instruction manual with our prayer, telling God how to bless us. Acceptance doesn’t come easily. But if we start looking at all the things in life as a blessing from God, we will eventually realise that it meant something, it did us some good in one way or the other. And that it was far better than what we had imagined for or asked for.

Here’s what happens. We begin praying for one thing or another. But praying for something in particular has its pitfalls. If we don’t get what we want, there is a danger of feeling disappointed, disillusioned and depressed. We lose faith and feel that God is not responding. But if you don’t pray for anything other than what God wants to give, there will be no disappointment. Your faith and trust in God must develop. Once that develops, then we relax and put ourselves into God’s caring hands.

“Sweet is Thy will” is the highest state of receptivity. It is a condition in which our mind is still and our ego is at rest. It is best described by the formula: human minus the mind equals God. In this condition, nothing stands between God and us. We become an empty cup and, the pure waters of divinity can flow unhampered into us. To derive the greatest benefit from the blessings bestowed by God, we should adopt a humble attitude. Our mind will be emptied of its distractions and we will be open to receive wave after wave, pitcher after pitcher of sweet grace.
