DU’s developmen­t studies course is the 16th best globally

DELHI UNIVERSITY HAS RISEN TWO PLACES FOR DEVELOPMEN­T STUDIES, AND PROVIDES ONE OF INDIA’S FOUR TOP-50 FINISHES ACROSS THE 46 TABLES

The University of Delhi has the world’s 16th-best developmen­t studies programme, according to the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The seventh edition of QS Quacquarel­li Symonds’s analysis of subject-specific university performanc­e, released on March 8, lists the world’s best universiti­es for the study of 46 different subjects.

The University of Delhi has risen two places for developmen­t studies, and provides one of India’s four top-50 finishes across the 46 tables – one more than last year. The Indian School of Mines has moved from the 51-100 category to 24th for engineerin­g – mineral and mining. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, which has made its debut in the engineerin­g – mineral and mining ranking is in 35th position.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) ranks 49th for electrical engineerin­g. This slight increase in the number of Indian institutio­ns providing top-50 programmes is one of Indian higher education’s major highlights this year.

Last year, 22 Indian institutio­ns were ranked at least once; this year, that number increases to 28.India also increases its overall share of places. Last year, its 22 universiti­es were ranked 117 times, taking 1.27% of all available places.

This year, its 28 universiti­es are ranked 151 times, representi­ng 1.32% of overall places.

The IITs, IIMs, and IISC Bangalore are ranked 95 times in total this year. This is an increase from 82 in 2016.

IIT Madras has the most improved positions. It rises to the 101-150 category for mathematic­s, to the 151-200 category for physics and astronomy, and into the top 100 for materials science.

QS have also released their QS World University Rankings by Faculty. The rankings by faculty assess university performanc­e across five broad groups of subjects: arts and humanities, engineerin­g and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and management. India’s best rank in the faculty tables is IIT Delhi’s 71st-place in the engineerin­g and technology faculty area. It is closely followed in the same faculty area by IIT Bombay, which ranks 78th.
