PANCHKULA/HISAR : After battling for life for 12 days, deputy superintendent of police Bhagwan Dass, an accused in Hisar triple murder case, died during treatment at a private hospital in Panchkula on Monday morning.

Dass, 52, had shot himself in the head with his service revolver on March 15 after he was transferred to Panchkula police headquarters after three persons were murdered on Holi in Sekhpura village of Hisar district.

On March 13, Dass was named along with 23 others by the police in an FIR registered for murder of Ram Kumar (57), Mukesh Kumar (22) and Pradeep Kumar (30) at Sekhpura village in Hisar. He was then posted as a DSP in Hisar. Pradeep, a BSF jawan, had come home to the village to celebrate Holi. The police have till now arrested six accused and booked 23 others, including DSP for ‘provoking the killers’.

Dass’ batchmate ACP Dalip Singh, who had shifted the DSP to the hospital, said on Monday, “Two days ago, a team of four doctors declared him brain dead. His brain couldn’t be repaired. He was on ventilator. Around 8.15am on Monday, he died.”

According to Dalip, the suicide note reads that Dass and his brother were wrongly framed in the FIR. “He held Balbir Singh, his nephew Sandeep, Sanjay, Amit, Dev and Pinnu, Ram Kumar, Rameshwar and Ravinder responsible for the extreme step,” said the ACP.

“He wrote main aisi zillat bhari zindagi nahin jee sakta (I can’t live with this shame). He did not name any police official. But his cousin has named other people. In total, an FIR for abetment to suicide has been registered against 16 people,” he added.

As per the case of abetment to suicide, Bhagwan Dass’ brother Surender has claimed that he had a chat with him where he claimed that he will commit suicide as he was harassed over implication in the murder case. The FIR added that the fight was between Ram Kumar’s supporters and Subhash’s men. “But Bhagwan Dass’ name was included by Sanjay, son of Ram Kumar, due to political rivalry,” alleged Roshan, Dass’ cousin in the FIR.

It was alleged that Dass had a dispute with former village sarpanch Balbir Singh who had contested panchayat election against his daughter Pooja Rani. The victims were said to be close to Balbir. Meanwhile, DSP Dass’ body is expected to be brought to his native village on Tuesday for cremation after autopsy.
