PATIALA : The Punjab governor VP Badnore, who is also the chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, has asked the principal secretary, higher education, Anurag Verma, to assume charge as vice-chancellor of both varsities till the selection of new incumbents.

The post of vice-chancellor of Punjabi University fell vacant on March 14 following the resignation of Jaspal Singh from his post. The GNDU V-C AS Brar has requested the chancellor to relieve him by March 31. Both Brar and Jaspal Singh were appointed during the previous SAD-BJP regime and had got extensions to remain in chair for more than eight years. With the change in guard, both tendered their resignation to the chancellor.

The governor, it is learnt, has also urged the Punjab government to form a search panel for selection of the new vice-chancellors for the both state-funded universities.

Name of Kusumjit Kaur Sidhu, a retired IAS officer, has been making rounds for the post of Punjabi University V-C. However, the decision is pending for want of legal opinion from the advocate general. Now, the government has decided to first forming a search panel.
