Chandigarh A day after SAS Nagar superintendent of police (SP), city, Parminder Singh Bhandal courted controversy after sharing a topless dancer’s video in a WhatsApp group, the Punjab director general of police has sought a fact-finding report on the incident from the inspector general of police (zonal).

“I have sought a report from the IG, Zonal,” DGP Suresh Arora told Hindustan Times. “We’ll see after that what action is to be taken.”

Meanwhile, the Punjab State Woman Commission chairperson Paramjit Kaur Landran has taken suo motu notice of the video.

“What has happened is very unfortunate. We have taken suo motu notice of the episode and would issue notice to the SAS Nagar SSP seeking report on investigation and action taken on the episode, which would be filed within 15 days,” said Landran.

Bhandal had sparked a row on Monday after a video of a topless dancer was shared on a social messaging app, WhatsApp, from his cell phone. Soon after, the officer had apologised saying, “Video was sent by mistake, my friend’s children were playing with my phone.”

As per the IT Act, “publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form” is punishable with jail term up to three years besides fine.

The SAS Nagar police claims that it cannot proceed against the SP in the absence of any complaint.

“I have not got any complaint in this regard and till we get a complaint we cannot take cognisance,” said SAS Nagar SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal.
