JALANDHAR: With gangster Vicky Gounder, who had fled the Nabha high-security jail in November last year, striking at will, his arch-rival Daljeet Singh Bhana, who is lodged in the Hoshiarpur jail, has sought more security.

Bhana’s father, Lakhwinder Singh, who is in New York, has written to Punjab Police, seeking tight security for his son. The letter addressed to the Punjab director general of police (DGP) has been forwarded to the Hoshiarpur police and jail authorities, with directions to increase vigil.

The letter came after Bhana sent an application to the jail superintendent, seeking more guards near his cell, which has now been turned into a high-security zone. Jail superintendent Vikramjeet Singh Panthey said he has sought 100 more personnel to beef up security on the premises. As a safety measure, Bhana is not being taken out of jail for court hearings and has been attending them through video-conferencing, said superintendent of police (headquarters) Amrik Singh Powar.

Bhana, a Jalandhar resident, is facing a double murder and attempt to murder case in the city. A few cases have also been registered against him at Patiala and Phagwara police stations.

Bhana’s close associate Sukha Kahlon, a notorious gangster, was gunned down by Gounder and his aides when he was being taken to Nabha Jail after a hearing in Jalandhar on January 21, 2015. They had killed Kahlon to avenge their associate’s murder.

Bhana also faces danger from his other rivals lodged in the Hoshiarpur jail. One of them, Kala Dhanula, owes allegiance to Gounder, said jail authorities. Dhanula is also separately lodged in a high-security zone in the jail.
