NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu allrounder Washington Sundar became the third youngest player in the Indian Premier League on Saturday, making his debut against holders Hyderabad Sunrisers.

At 17 years and 199 days, the teenager with an interesting name returned impressive figures of 3-0-19-0 bowling off-spin as Sunrisers Hyderabad made 178 for three after RPS elected to bowl at the SCA Stadium in Pune. It was the first Twenty20 match for Washington Sundar, who has played five first-class matches and nine one-day games for Tamil Nadu. Sundar was a member of the India under-19 squad, which reached the final of last year’s junior World Cup in Bangladesh, where they lost to West Indies.

SARFARAZ KHAN’S IPL RECORD

The record for the youngest IPL player is held by Royal Challengers Bangalore’s hard-hitter Sarfaraz Khan ---- he is out this season due to injury. Sarfaraz Khan made his debut in 2015 IPL aged 17 years and 177 days. Left-arm pacer, Pradeep Sangwan, is the second youngest.

He was 17 years and 179 days when he debuted for Delhi Daredevils against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai on May 2, 2008.

Washington Sundar though is younger than Unmukt Chand, who was 18 years and 16 days old when he made his debut for Delhi Daredevils against Mumbai Indians in 2011.

Punjab batsman Mandeep Singh too was part of the teen brigade that arrived in the Indian Premier League.

He was only 18 years and 94 days old when he made his debut for Kings XI Punjab.

Mandeep Singh now plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

However, for the statistically inclined, international cricket boasts of much younger players in all three formats.

Pakistan’s Hasan Raza set the record for the youngest Test player --- 14 years, 227 days --when he made his debut against Zimbabwe in 1996.

Hasan Raza also is the youngest to play One-day Internationals (14 years, 233 days).

The youngest player in Twenty20 Internationals is Hong Kong’s Haqas Khan, at 15 years and 259 days.
