HC DIRECTS GOVT, COLLEGE MANAGEMENT TO HOLD TALKS

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed the Punjab government and Gian Sagar Medical College management to hold a meeting on Wednesday.

The direction was issued during the resumed hearing of a plea by students demanding to start of classes immediately. All 10 petitioner students had stated that they were admitted to the college on the basis of the NEET merit/PMET merit in the academic session 2016-2017 and attended all the classes till January 2017. But then entire teaching faculty and the paramedical staff went on strike over non-payment salaries and classes were not being held. During the hearing on Tuesday, the court was told by management that earlier trustees have resigned and new trustees had been inducted. New trustees were ready and willing to invest the required amount for the smooth functioning of college and settling down previous liabilities including the salaries, the court was told. However, the state advocate general Atul Nanda suggested that an affidavit be demanded from trustees to disclose as to who were present trustees of Gian Sagar Education and Charitable Trust and whether the person who had been interacting with government, Harsatinder Singh was actually a trustee or not, he said. While seeking the response from college, the court also asked it to give details as to how much money new trustees were ready to invest and how deficiencies pointed out by regulatory bodies would be removed in college. The matter will be taken up on May 1.
