Akali sarpanch beaten to death in Amritsar, 4 booked
AMRITSAR: An Akali sarpanch was beaten to death allegedly by a group of Congress workers in Chet Singh Wala village of Attari assembly segment in Amritsar district on Tuesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Gurpinder Singh Lali, 33.
“My husband was returning home when he was attacked by Congress workers,” said Lali’s wife Gurjinder Kaur. “Chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh should intervene and ensure arrest of suspects,” she added.
Amritsar (rural) senior superintendent of police J Elanchezhian said, “Lali was intercepted by suspects and attacked with bricks. Though he was rushed to the hospital , but could not be saved.”
The SSP added four persons, identified as Sukhdev Singh, Jagsher Singh, Shamsher Singh and Gurdeep Singh, were booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code on the complaint of Lali’s family. Efforts are on to nab the accused, he added.
In Chandigarh, former deputy chief minister and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said the death of Lali was the result of the vendetta unleashed by the Congress-led state government on Akali workers.
“If the local police had swung into action, a young life could have been saved,” he said.
Badal further alleged that the Congress cadre had been given a free hand to indulge in such vendetta against Akalis.

Even as the family of Lali maintained that he was assaulted by Congress workers, a release issued by the district administration said the deceased sarpanch had supported Congress candidate Gurjeet Aujla in the Amritsar Lok Sabha bypoll.
