Mohali to get govt medical college with 100 seats for students

CHANDIGARH: Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday gave in-principle approval to set up a new government medical college and hospital with 100 seats for students and 200 beds for patients at SAS Nagar (Mohali) in order to address the critical shortage of medical specialist­s while giving a boost to medical education in the state.

This will be fourth such medical college in the state after Government Medical College, Amritsar, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, and Government Medical College, Patiala.

The new college will be set up to address the critical shortage of specialist­s while giving a boost to medical education in the state, a spokespers­on said.

It would be establishe­d over 20 acres at a cost of nearly ₹190 crore, of which 60% would be contribute­d by the Centre and the remaining be borne by the state government.

Recurring expenditur­e for maintenanc­e would be ₹45 crore a year, which would be borne by the state, said an official spokespers­on.

The medical college would have a faculty of six professors, 14 associate professors, 18 assistant professors, 17 tutors, 24 senior residents and 25 junior residents in various discipline­s. The chief minister informed the meeting that several industrial­ists had shown interest in setting up medical colleges and facilities in the state. This will be the first of five new medical colleges that the Congress had promised in its poll manifesto.

The decision was announced after a meeting to review the functionin­g of medical and dental colleges in the state.

The state government will soon forward a detailed proposal in this regard to the Union ministry of health and family welfare.
