KOTA: A 17-year-old Dalit boy, son of a government hospital compounder from Rajasthan, has aced the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2017 for admission to the IITs with a perfect 360/360 score.

Udaipur resident Kalpit Veerwal said attending classes regularly and having confidence in his ability helped him sail through the exam, the results for which were announced on Thursday. He is the topper in both general and Scheduled Caste category.

Veerwal told Hindustan Times over the phone that the CBSE chairperson, RK Chaturvedi, called him personally to convey the news.

“It is a happy moment but I am taking it normally and focussing on JEE Advanced, which would be held next month,” the teenager, who appeared for the Class 12 board exams as a private candidate, said.

“I used to study for around 5-6 hours daily apart from attending coaching classes and classes in school,” he added.

Veerwal said his family, teachers and Kota-based Resonance Eduventure Private Limited’s Udaipur branch helped him achieve the feat. He has been a student of the coaching institute since Class 8.

“My parents looked after me well so that I do not get ill and miss studies,” he said.

His father Pushkar Lal is a compounder at Udaipur’s Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital while mother Pushpa is a government school teacher. His elder brother is a medical student at the AIIMS. Veerwal, who is fond of cricket, badminton and music, said he has not yet decided about his career plans but wants to seek admission in IIT-Mumbai to pursue computer science.

When asked whether he stayed away from smartphones during his studies, he said: “I made smart use of smartphones. I did not remain on social media sites but used the internet for gathering information related to academics.”
