INLD TO STOP PUNJAB BUSES
Abhay Chautala says party’s youth workers will stop Punjab Roadways buses as well as vehicles of officials and politicians of Punjab on national highway1
CHANDIGARH: Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala on Saturday said party’s youth workers would stop Punjab Roadways buses as well as vehicles of officials and politicians at the Haryana border on national highway-1 on July 10, to press for the demand for construction of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
The hearing on SYL issue would be resumed in the Supreme Court on July 11.
Briefing mediapersons about what he termed as one-day “symbolic protest”, leader of Opposition in Haryana assembly Abhay said the decision was taken at the INLD’s executive committee meeting here. He was accompanied by party state president Ashok Arora.
‘WILL NOT STOP PRIVATE VEHICLES’
He added that though the INLD has decided to stop roadways buses and vehicles of officials going from Punjab towards New Delhi, party workers would not stop private vehicles. “Instead, the workers have been asked togive the people moving in every private vehicle a rose flower and a handbill, urging them to ask the Punjab government to construct the SYL canal which it had not constructed for the past 50 years,” Abhay said.
Asked where will they hold the protest on the NH-1, Abhay said the party was yet to decide the specific point in this regard.
Lambasting the Delhi administration for trying to dissuade party workers from protesting on the issue of SYL canal at Jantar Mantar, the INLD leader said party workers would start dharnas at sub-divisional levels in various constituencies on May 1 and submit memorandums to respective deputy commissioners.
He said the party also decided to demand Rs 25,000 per acre compensation for wheat crop in case of fire. He flayed the recent announcement of agriculture minister OP Dhankar to give a relief Rs 12,000 per acre.
He slammed the state government for its alleged failure to lift mustard crop in time because of which the farmers had to sell off their crop for about Rs 3,200 per quintal, which was below the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 3,700. He said the INLD would also pressure the government to improve the power and water supply because of which farmers were facing hardships.
