PATHANKOT : The Pathankot and Gurdaspur police have launched a joint hunt for six unidentified persons who fled a police check post at Behrampur village in Gurdaspur district and later abandoned their SUV in the dense forest area of Makhanpur village falling in Pathankot district, after the cops chased them late on Tuesday night.

DSP (rural) Kuldip Singh told Hndustan Times that around 8.30 pm on Tuesday, police officials of Behrampur signaled a Scorpio car coming from the Makora Pattan side to stop but the driver did not lower the SUV’s speed and jumped the naka after which, the police sounded an alert.

He said that on the next station at Marara village, the cops again tried to stop the car but the occupants again managed to flee from the Dhussi Bundh side using Pantoon Bridge. Later, they left the vehicle in the forest.

“We have recovered a Jammu and Kashmir number plate (JK19-2787) from the vehicle while the vehicle bore a Punjab number (PB06-6508). It seems that the miscreants changed the number to dodge the police,” said the DSP.

He added, “We have learnt from our Jammu and Kashmir counterparts that the vehicle was snatched from a Gujjar from Vijaypur (Jammu) who had hired it from one Mushtaq of Ramban area.”

The search operation is on and we hope that soon we will catch them, said the DSP adding that prima facie it seemed that the suspects are from Gujjar community as they had asked the way to Narot Jaimal Singh from a Gujjar child near Behrampur in the local dialect.

The ongoing tension between two countries has already put the security agencies on high alert in these two border districts where the militants have struck killing several security persons in the past.
