Amit Sampla resigns, SIT starts probe
JALANDHAR: In dock over sexual harassment complaint against him by a 32-year-old woman, Amit Sampla alias Ashu, nephew of state BJP chief Vijay Sampla, resigned from the post of state general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing on Wednesday.
He sent his resignation to party president and BJP’s youth wing head Shivbir Rajan.
Talking to HT, Amit said, “I have submitted the resignation with the party as opposition leaders were alleging that probe would get derailed owing to my post.”
However, sources in the party said Amit was asked by the high command to resign from his post as it was damaging party’s image.
Meanwhile, police SIT headed by additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-II) D Sudarvizhi, along with ACP Deepika Singh and ACP Surinder Pal, has started the investigation into the case.
The SIT recorded statement of the complainant on Wednesday.
In a press release, the woman claimed that she was also beaten and thrashed by Ashu and others when she went to his house to talk about marriage on April 26.
She also alleged that they tore her clothes and snatched her purse, which contained three mobile phones.
She also shared screenshots of messages exchanged between her and Amit.
As SIT head was unavailable for comments despite repeated attempts, police commissioner PK Sinha said that SIT would call the complainant again on Thursday for the statement.
