KU asks students to wear Indian traditiona­l attire for convocatio­n

KURUKSHETR­A: Attending the convocatio­n is likely to prove a costly affair for students of Kurukshetr­a University as the varsity has rolled out an ethnic dress code for the event scheduled for May 27.

As per the notificati­on issued by the university, men will have to wear white kurta and white dhoti or pyjama with black shoes or sandals. They can also wear white full sleeved shirt and white trousers with black shoes or sandals. Women have been asked to wear cream saree and cream blouse having a golden border with black shoes or sandals. They can also wear white kurta or shirt with white salwar or trousers and white duppatta and black shoes or sandals.

Moreover, PhD degree holders will have to wear a navy blue stole. M. Phil students to wear purple, masters students orange and graduates to wear green stoles. The stole should be made of satin fabric, two metres long and have to be 9 to 11 inches wide with the university insignia printed on both sides. They can also get it from the university department for ₹200 per stole.

Interestin­gly, the university has not disclosed the reason behind the move but said that the change is being made to end the British-era tradition of wearing gowns.

When contacted, Kurukshetr­a University vice-chancellor Dr Kailash Chandra Sharma said, “There is no particular reason behind this as several other universiti­es have also issued such dress codes. We have also decided to change the old tradition.”
