NEWDELHI: This is the quintessential Delhi story, with generous dollops of politics, crime, traffic and street food.

Former BJP MLA Vijay Jolly was having roadside golgappas in South Delhi’s Lado Sarai on Wednesday evening, when two motorcyle-borne youths broke the window of his white i20 car to steal his laptop, camera and important documents. The politician spotted the duo soon after the crime, but could not give chase because of a traffic jam. He then approached the Saket police, who registered a case of theft. The thieves are yet to be identified.

Jolly, who has been the Delhi BJP general secretary and vice president in the past, said he and a friend were on their way to Janakpuri from his Sangram Vihar office when the incident occurred. They were going to attend a friend’s retirement party. “As I passed Lado Sarai, I noticed a popular street food stall. I parked my car on the roadside because I felt like having chaat and golgappe,” he told HT on Thursday.

Jolly and his friend had barely begun eating when a young couple drew his attention to his car. “The right window in the back was shattered. My bag — containing a laptop, a digital camera, my flight tickets to Cambodia and some documents meant for senior BJP leaders — were missing,” he said. The couple described the suspects as two men on a black motorcycle that didn’t have a number plate.

“I walked around a little to find a Splendor motorcycle without a number plate parked near a liquor shop. Two youths were walking towards the bike with alcohol bottles in their hands,” said Jolly. The politician started pursuing them in his car, but bad traffic ended his quest.
