JALANDHAR: To tighten the grip on traffic violators and curb corruption in fine recovery, Jalandhar and Ludhiana are all set to introduce the e-challan system in the coming weeks.

The two cities have been selected by the Centre to start the system as a pilot project. Both the cities were recently called for a meeting with National Informatics Centre (NIC) to discuss the traffic challenges faced by them. The e-challan system is currently operational in around 89 cities across the nation. Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) traffic Harbinder Singh Bhalla, also the project in-charge said, “We have received the system software from NIC and will be purchasing hardware, to start the project. In the first phase, the traffic police will purchase five machines at the cost of ₹2 lakh.” “We will hopefully launch the e-challan system next week, said Bhalla.

He said, “The traffic police had imposed around 12,000 challans in May.” “The upgraded e-challan system will be linked with Safe School Vaahan Scheme which will help them to detect unauthorised vehicles,” he informed.

The city will soon get speedometers to check the vehicle speed at major traffic points across the city. Last year, as many as 26 cities of Maharashtra started e-challan system as a pilot project.

E-CHALLAN SYSTEM

Under the e-challan system, transactions will be cashless and violators will receive challan notification on their mobiles. The challan will be recovered on the spot. The major component of the system is that no documents will be impounded from the violators. The traffic police will maintain its own database of fines imposed. The database will also help the traffic authorities to cancel driving license of major offenders.
