ASI booked for hurting religious sentiments

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Didar Singh, posted with Government Railway Police, Sangrur, has been booked for hurting religious sentiments on the complaint of a Sikh baptised woman, who was allegedly pulled by the arm and asked to sit beside him by the drunk cop in a bus on Friday evening. The action came after the victim appeared before judicial magistrate first lass (JMIC), Nirmala Devi, in Sunam to record her statement under Section 164 (recording of confessions and statements) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on Monday.

“Police have recorded her statement. Police teams have been sent to arrest him and raids are being conducted, he will be arrested soon,” said SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu.

Sources in the GRP said Didar had been reported absent from duty since July 21.

He was deployed at the GRP police station, Sangrur, for the past year.

“We have also written to the DGP and the Government Railway Police for further action against Didar,” the SSP added.

“The top brass has sought a report on Didar. He is likely to be suspended soon,” said a GRP official on condition of anonymity.

A video of a youth beating up the ASI aboard a state-run Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), at Patran had gone viral. The video showed Didar in an inebriated state.

Sources said the woman had boarded the bus from Mehal Kalan.

The woman got down from the bus in Khetla village and the cop was beaten up in Patran district Patiala.

A case under Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious belief) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modest) of the Indian penal code has been registered.
