GURGAON: The newly constructed eight-lane flyover at Hero Honda Chowk was opened to traffic on Monday by Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar amid a heavy downpour.

A large number of political functionaries and senior government officials were present on the occasion. Khattar inaugurated the 1.4 km flyover under the cover of umbrellas around 1.30pm.

Traffic on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (NH-8) has been a major challenge for the Gurgaon administration, with vehicles from multiple points converging on Hero Honda Chowk and resulting in snarls, often stretching to several hours.

The flyover project had been proposed to take the load off the expressway and facilitate a smooth flow of local and long-distance traffic. With the completion of this project, vehicles going towards Sector 10, Kadipur, Basai, Jhajjar and Sultanpur would not have to pass through Kherki Daula toll plaza and instead take a straight route from Hero Honda Chowk.

The rain also brought waterlogging as every year, the Hero Honda crossing witnesses heavy jams during the rains. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials said underpasses, which are part of the project, will be completed by year-end. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) is almost done with acquiring land to expand the Badshahpur drain and the authorities expressed confidence that the vexatious problem of Hero Honda Chowk waterlogging would be resolved in the next six months.

On July 28, 2016, Hero Honda Chowk witnessed one of the worst gridlocks in the city’s history — it lasted over 24 hours— after the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway became inundated with water from the Badshahpur drain. After the inauguration, CM said the flyover will reduce jams on the expressway and help commuters reach their destinations with ease.
