ROHTAK:A nine-year-old boy kidnapped five years ago by an orphanage worker was recovered on Sunday from Rohtak’s Killa Mohalla locality.

The boy, identified as Pankaj, was kidnapped from outside his house in Hisar’s Barwala sub-division by Savitri Devi who sold him to Bala for Rs 2.5 lakh, keeping the latter under the impression that she was adopting the boy legally, police said.

“Bala, a widow, is a Class 4 worker at a Rohtak hospital. She had lost her son in accident at a young age and was looking to adopt a child. She got ready to pay Rs 2.5 lakh for Pankaj’s adoption,” Sunita Devi, who was part of the police team, said.

The police said the boy has been living with Bala since 2013 and she had admitted him to a decent school where he is studying in Class 5. She, however, had to part with the boy after the Hisar police took him in their custody to hand him over to his father Jaiveer Singh.

The police carried out the raid after they received a tip from an aide of the kidnapper.

“The child was kidnapped on June 22, 2013. An FIR was lodged in Hisar. When the police team went to take him back, he refused to go as he wanted to stay with his adoptive mother. He is being counselled by experts,” a police officer said.

The police said Savitri is on the run. A case has been registered against her.
