Rajmata’s ashes immersed in Sutlej; Sonia recalls her patriotism

IN CONDOLENCE LETTER TO AMARINDER, SONIA DESCRIBES HER AS A WOMAN WHO LIVED HER LIFE WITH GRACE AND DIGNITY, AND A STRONG SENSE OF SERVICE

KIRATPUR SAHIB (RUPNAGAR)/ PATIALA: Ashes of Rajmata Mohinder Kaur, mother of chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, were immersed in the Sutlej at Gurdwara Patalpuri Sahib in Kiratpur Sahib, Rupnagar, on Thursday afternoon amid chanting of religious hymns and prayers.

Amarinder and his family members brought the urn containing the ashes to Kiratpur Sahib from Shahi Samadhan in Patiala and performed the immersion ceremony at Asth Ghat in the gurdwara.

Amarinder’s brother Malwinder Singh, son Raninder Singh,son-in-law Gurpal Singh, grandsons Nirvan Singh and Yadhuinder Singh, besides Harshdeep Singh Dhillon, son of Amarinder’s younger sister, joined him.

The CM then offered prayers at the gurdwara before partaking of langar.

Assembly speaker Rana KP Singh, and cabinet ministers Brahm Mahindra, Rana Gurjit Singh, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa were among those present.

Earlier, Congressme­n gathered at Rupnagar and Morinda to pay tributes to Mohinder Kaur when her ashes were being taken to Kiratpur Sahib from Patiala in a cavalcade.

After the immersion, Amarinder and his family stayed for some time at the canal rest house in Rupnagar before returning to Patiala.

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed grief at the passing of Mohinder Kaur, recalling her contributi­on to the party and the country, as well as her patriotism.

In a condolence letter to Amarinder, Sonia described her as a woman who lived her life with utmost grace and dignity, and a strong sense of service to the Congress party and the country.

“In her years as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, she demonstrat­ed unshakeabl­e patriotism, as well as her commitment to furthering education, and through that the values of good citizenshi­p,” Sonia wrote, adding that she was admired and respected across the political spectrum.
