AMRITSAR: Former Congressman and local political leader Mandeep Singh Manna on Tuesday flayed the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for allegedly allowing an eatery that sells non-vegetarian products from the premises of Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research that is run by it.

He also said that non-vegetarian items are served in the mess of the institute. This prompted SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar to say he would visit the institute to inquire.

Manna, during a press conference, said the SGPC has given some area on rent for a cafe.

“Though the entry of this cafe is from the main road, its structure is inside the premises of the institute.”

Stressing that this was violation of the Sikh ‘maryada’ (religious code of conduct), Manna said, “The SGPC is taking rent of this place; how can all this happen without its notice? A gurdwara is also there on the premises.”

He alleged that SGPC was mum as it “the eatery was run by influential people in the committee”.

He also showed photographs purportedly showing non-vegetarian food being served to back his allegations.

When contacted, SGPC chief Badungar said, “I am unaware about this. It is not right to comment on something without checking it. I will visit the place in a day or two to check facts.”
