Digital eye: SBS Nagar gets full CCTV surveillan­ce

OUT OF 146, 70 CAMERAS ARE DIRECTLY ATTACHED WITH THE NAWANSHAHR SSP’S CONTROL ROOM

SBSNAGAR: The Nawanshahr city police station has witnessed only one snatching case that too was solved within two hours owing to the pan city surveillan­ce by 146 close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The cops are 24X7 monitoring the entry and exit points of city approximat­ely 4-km area from Balachaur, Garhshanka­r, Rahon and Jalandhar ,using cameras.

Out of 146, 70 cameras are directly attached with the control room, set up in the office of SSP. Also 76 cameras have been recently installed at strategic points in the city. Major areas including Chandigarh road, bus stand, Rahon Road, Railway road, Kothi road, Saloh road, Geeta Bhawan road, Ambedkar Chowk, DC office, Barnala Kalan, Garhshanka­r road, Judicial Complex, Fatti Basta Chowk, Nehru Gate, Committee Ghar road, BLM Girls College, Vikas Nagar, RK Arya College, Government Senior Secondary School and Banga railway crossing are covered by the CCTVs.

CCTV cameras with wireless connectivi­ty with the city police station ensures round the clock monitoring. Surprising­ly, the government has not paid a single penny for the cameras and educationa­l organisati­ons, market associatio­ns and individual­s donated the funds for the same.

A sum of ₹30 lakh incurred for the installati­on of cameras. Station house officer Raj Kumar who had taken the initiative said, cameras act as a vital aid to investigat­ion.The vehicle theft cases have also reduced, said Kumar. “Specially trained police personnel have been deputed at the control room to scrutinize the LCD activities,” Kumar added.

The picture of criminals, caught in the CCTV cameras, are immediatel­y released in public domain, leading to arrests without delay, he told. In mishap cases also, the cameras help to identify guilty, said Kumar. SHO told an amount of ₹5,000 was donated by SSP for the maintenanc­e of the cameras.
