Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University
Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, a project undertaken by the SGPC is a missionary, charitable and humanitarian institution which seeks to impart inclusive education to learners irrespective of castes, creeds and religions. Sardar Parkash Singh Badal, former Chief Minister of Punjab had announced in 2004 that a university dedicated to the ideals enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib would be established. His dream reached fruition when the SGGSWU commenced its first academic session in July 2011. There has been no looking back since then. With all kinds of support from the SGPC, the University has made rapid strides in a short span of time and has emerged as a premier institution of higher learning in North India. It was a matter of great pride and joy for the Varsity when the University got the approval of University Grants Commission under section 2(f) of the UGC act 1956. Several innovative academic programmes in the fields of emerging technologies, sciences and humanities are being run by the University for the benefit of the students.
Major thrust areas of the University are promotion of value based quality education and research. Research projects worth Rs. 3 crores have been awarded to the University faculty by the national agencies such as the DST, CSIR and DAE etc. A large number of faculty members are actively involved in carrying out research and their research papers are regularly published in journals of national and international repute. Seminars, workshops and conferences are organized on a regular basis by various University departments.
Focus on Holistic development
Modern life is characterized by alienations of myriad hues. The teachings of the Sikh Gurus, enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib can go a long way in healing the rift which scars the psyche of the modern man by uniting him to his own self, the society around him and to the Divine Light whose residence is the human heart. With the aim of connecting the lives of human beings to the knowledge and teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the University has established three research centres, namely Guru Arjun Dev Centre for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Bhai Gurdas Centre for Sikh Studies and Guru Nanak Dev Centre for Sikh Music. The aim is to research and explore, with reverence, the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib so that their dissemination among the people at large can reunite them with the essence of being human.
In order to promote scholastic excellence, the academic structure of the University has been divided into faculty system like the Faculty of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Commerce and Management, Faculty of Education and Information Science, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Performing Arts, Faculty of Medical Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences. The University students are provided with state of the art technological infrastructure by way of well-equipped labs such as Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Communication Skills, Physics, Chemistry, Computer, Chemistry, Electronics, and Mechanical Engineering. Quiz Contests, Declamation Contests, Group Discussions and Debates are a regular feature. University's annual youth festival Pargaas is a much awaited and largely attended event.
Scholarships and community development programs:
In order to promote inclusive education and merit, several scholarships are provided to the needy, meritorious, minorities, SC, ST, and single girl child students are covered under such scholarship schemes. Apart from this, fee concessions and scholarships are provided to meritorious students from economically backward sections of the society. The University seeks to reach out to the larger community through its outreach programmes initiated by the NSS wings, Bhagat Puran Singh Eco Club and the Department of Physiotherapy. The volunteers of the Bhagat Puran Singh Eco Club have planted more than 3000 trees in the University Campus in furtherance with their ‘clean and green’ approach. Blood Donation Camps, Physiotherapy Camps are organized on regular basis. The University has recently adopted five villages namely, Dadumajra, Salempur, Kharaura, Bhalmajra, and Hussainpur for their integrated development.
MoUs and Collaborations with Foreign Universities:
Under the energizing and dynamic leadership of Chancellor and SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar and Vice Chancellor Dr. Sukhdarshan Singh Khehra, the University has signed many MoUs with foreign universities including the University of Cambridge (UK), Massey University (New Zealand) Xi’an Jiaotong (China), Rovira I Virgili University (Spain) to provide a foothold to our students, researchers and faculty on a global platform. The students of the University are also doing research and project work in nationally and internationally renowned establishments like Albama University (USA), National Institute of Material Sciences (Japan), DRDO, CSIO, IIT, BARC to name a few.
The University has a Training and Placement Cell to collaborate with industry and academia. To make the students industryready, regular training sessions are conducted which include activities like group discussions, role-plays, mock interviews, reasoning tests, industrial visits etc. Campus placement drives are held regularly and during the last few years, many reputed companies like Axis Bank, Deutsche Bank, Yes Bank, Tata Docomo, Mozilla, Accrete Globus Technology, Catalyst One, Vodafone, Oppo, Vivo, Nestle and Impinge Solution etc. have selected the University students to meet their manpower need
Conquering new horizons and future prospects:
The University draws succour from the legacy of the SGPC (its parent body) and the inspiring academic leadership of the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sukhdarshan Singh Khehra. The University has constructed a State-of-the-Art Bebe Nanaki Girls Hostel with world class infrastructural facilities and laid the foundation stone for Boys Hostel. The University is also committed to the cause of promoting sports in the region and for the fulfilment of the same a Sports Stadium has been constructed. The University is also running a Girls' Hockey Academy. The girls of the academy have donned the Indian colours at the international stage as well and have made the country proud.
