Shift Chintpurni Medical College students within two months: HC

CHANDIGARH : The Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered shifting of 100-odd students of Pathankot’s Chintpurni Medical College within two months to other colleges in the state.

The direction was passed by high court bench of justice Ajay Tewari on Friday during the resumed hearing of a petition of 101 students enrolled in 2014-15 session.

The students had moved the high court on April 26, 2016, seeking shifting to other colleges in the state as their institute is “short of infrastructure”.

College had argued that it had not been shutdown and deficiencies, if any, would be removed. But the court observed that college has had a “chequered” history and on various occasions, it has had run-ins with the authorities since it started in 2011.

The students have had undisputed right to continue their education, the court observed, asking the government to complete exercise within two months.

It also took note of the fact that the central government has barred the college for taking admissions for two years.

Chintpurni Medical College came up in 2011 with 150 MBBS seats after the Medical Council of India issued it a letter of intent based on state government’s essentiality certificate, which is an undertaking to the Centre that if the college fails to get regular recognition, the state government will adjust the students in one of own colleges.
