CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief secretary Karan Avtar Singh on Thursday asked the chief vigilance officers of government departments, corporations, boards and local government authorities to send names of officials indulging in corrupt practices or with dubious service records to the vigilance department.

The chief secretary said this at a state-level meeting of CVOs. He said the government had decided to implement vigilance guidelines to weed out corruption in the state. Already, the government has circulated instructions to the CVOs for implementation of measures to curb corruption.

“To streamline the investigations and proper follow-up of vigilance cases by the CVOs, the vigilance department will draft specific guidelines on the pattern of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) guidelines,” he said.

He asked the CVOs to hold monthly meetings with heads of departments, administrative secretary as well as the secretary vigilance to review the references and complaints forwarded by the vigilance bureau so that further action could be initiated against the erring officials. Highlighting the role of CVOs, secretary (vigilance) Vivek Pratap said they constituted a vital link between the departments and the vigilance bureau and must perform their duties diligently as per guidelines. He said the CVOs must ensure expeditious action on investigation reports in their organisations.

BK Uppal, chief director, Punjab Vigilance Bureau, said there was a dire need to check malpractices and irregularities in various departments, especially those into public dealing so that people could get justice and citizen-centric services without offering bribes.

Director general of police (DGP administration) MK Tewari, Vigilance Bureau director G Nageshwara Rao, additional principal chief conservator of forests Sunil Kumar, Punjab Pollution Control Board chairman KS Pannu, rural development and panchayats director C Sibin and local government director KK Yadav were among those present on the occasion.
