SIT FORMED TO PROBE DOUBLE MURDER AFTER PUNJAB CM’S ORDER, MOTIVE UNCLEAR

MOHALI: Senior journalist KJ Singh, 63, and his mother Gurcharan Kaur, 92, were found murdered at their house in the heart of Mohali on Saturday afternoon.

The double murder came to light at 1pm when KJ’s sister, Yashpal Kaur, and her son, Ajay Pal, came with lunch, which she brought as a routine to their house in Phase 3B2.

KJ was a former news editor of the Indian Express, The Times of India and The Tribune in Chandigarh.

He was a bachelor and lived with his mother. His elder brother, BP Singh, stays in Chandigarh, while Yashpal lived with her mother and brother till five months ago. She shifted to her son Ajay’s house after that.

The senior journalist was freelancing for a Canadian magazine. He talked to his elder brother on Friday evening.

“Yashpal informed the police. The exact time of the death will be known after the post-mortem,” said Alam Vijay Singh, deputy superintendent of police (city), Mohali. She found blood stains on the main door that was bolted from outside and the trail led to the room where KJ’s body was on the bed. He had been stabbed in the stomach and neck. His bedridden mother was found strangu- lated in the adjacent room.

There were signs of a struggle before the murders as the furniture was not in place and there were blood stains all over the house. The police suspect more than one assailant.

The police set up a special investigation team (SIT), led by IG (Crime) Shashi Prabha Dwivedi, on the directive of Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to probe the murders.

“The motive is unclear. Some items are missing from the house,” said Kuldeep Singh Chahal, senior superintendent of police, Mohali. KJ’s green Ford Ikon car and an LED TV are missing. The incident has left the media fraternity of Chandigarh and residents of the area shocked.
