TARN TARAN : A 35-year-old man and his four accomplices brutally murdered a man accused of killing his father at Thatha village, 30km from the district headquarters Tarn Taran, on Saturday night, police said.

The victim, Buta Singh (40), main accused in the murder of Harbans Singh (55) of the village but currently on bail, was allegedly attacked by Harbans’s son Gurpreet Singh (35) and his four accomplices when he was in the village to attend a wedding.

Gurpreet has been booked along with Vickey, Jassa Singh, Baldev Singh and Sonu, all of Thatha village and now at large, by the Bhikhiwind police on murder charges.

The enmity had taken a bloody turn in a quarrel last year when Buta injured Harbans, and was booked initially under section 326 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Harbans succumbed to his injuries and police added section 302 (murder), but Buta got bail after remaining in jail for some months, sources said.

He was living at his brotherin-law Baz Singh’s house in nearby town Patti, and came to Thatha village on Saturday night. Before leaving, he went his village home for collecting some woollens when Harbans’s son Gurmeet found out.

He and his friends first kidnapped Buta, thrashed him terribly and then killed him with blows to his head with sharpedged weapons, police said. On a complaint by Buta’s brotherin-law, police lodged the first information report (FIR).
