MUMBAI: Eman Ahmed, who was once the world’s heaviest woman before undergoing surgery in Mumbai earlier this year, passed away in Abu Dhabi on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest, days after she turned 37.

An official statement from Burjeel Hospital said Eman died at 4.35am owing to complications from underlying co-morbid conditions, including heart disease and kidney dysfunction.

Taking to HT from Abu Dhabi, doctors said Eman was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from her special ward on Sunday night. “Despite our best efforts, Eman’s condition kept deteriorating and she stopped responding to medication. I can’t discuss the exact cause of her death, but we suspect it’s multi-organ failure followed by cardiac arrest,” said Dr Nabil Debouni, medical director, Burjeel Hospital.

Ahmed, a native of Egypt was brought to Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital for weight-loss treatment and transferred to Burjeel Hospital after spending three months in Mumbai. The 37-year-old weighed 504kg when she arrived in Mumbai and doctors at Saifee said the bariatric surgery and diet regime they gave Ahmed helped her lose 300kg.

Previously, doctors had shared videos of her recovery, claiming that she was healing three times faster than they had planned.

KIN’S SPAT WITH DOCS

Her sister Shaimaa Selim had asked doctors not to speak to media over Eman’s treatment without her permission.

She had told Hindustan Times that the hospital in Abu Dhabi treated them “like humans, not animals”. .

“I still love India and its kind people, but not Dr Muffazal Lakdawala (Eman’s doctor) and Saifee. Fame and propaganda made them crazy,” she said. Selim had alleged that Mumbai doctors’ claims of Eman’s weight loss were false.
