GURMEET AND ZORA SINGH, INCHARGE OF GODOWNS IN SUNAM, CONCEALED THAT ITEMS SUCH AS POLYTHENE COVERS WERE MISSING

SANGRUR: Police on Tuesday booked two Markfed employees on the charge of committing Rs 1.3-crore fraud.

According to the first information report (FIR), the accused — Gurmeet Singh and Zora Singh, in-charge of Markfed godowns in Sunam — concealed the fact that some articles such as polythene covers, gunny sacks and wood were missing from the store. On paper, they showed that the things were inside the godown.

“During inspection, a committee found things missing. A report was sent to the higher authorities at Chandigarh following which the duo was suspended and we wrote to police to register an FIR,” said Markfed’s Sunam branch officer Tarsdeep Sharma. “The worth of missing items was more than Rs 130 crore,” he added.

A case has been registered against the accused under IPC sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent), 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) at the Sunam police station.

“We registered case on directions of the SSP. We will recover records from the department for further probe,” said station house officer Bharpoor Singh.
