NEW DELHI : A Swift Dzire sedan was stolen from east Delhi’s Vinod Nagar in the presence of its owner. SR Bansal, the owner, thought he could stop the thieves from fleeing with the car, but the car lifter drove the vehicle over Bansal’s left foot and escaped.

Sunday was not the first time that Bansal’s car was stolen. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Bansal said he has lost two cars — a Maruti 800 and a Tata Indica — in the last seven years.

The white Swift Dzire is registered in the name of a glass products manufacturing firm of which Bansal is the vice-president. He lives with his family in east Delhi’s Yamuna Vihar.

On Sunday afternoon, Bansal was visiting his friend at his office in Vinod Nagar and was accompanied by his brother-in-law Sanjay Aggarwal. The trio was sitting back after having lunch when the theft took place, Bansal said.

“I happened to casually turn around and looked at my car parked a few metres away. The driver’s side of the door was open and someone was getting inside,” Bansal said. There already was another man in the rear seat, he said. Suspecting that it was an attempt to steal his laptop and mobile phones from the car, Bansal rushed towards the vehicle. It was at that moment that he realised that the thief’s accomplices were in another Swift Dzire car parked right next to his vehicle.
