SRINAGAR/JAMMU: The army gunned down five militants trying to enter Jammu and Kashmir through the disputed border, where heavy and unprovoked Pakistani shelling and gunfire killed two children and wounded a dozen frontier villagers on Monday. A police officer in Poonch district said firing from Pakistan killed nine-year-old Israr Ahmed and Yasmin Akhtar, aged 15.

JAMMU: Two children were killed and 12 villagers injured, three of them critically, as Pakistan targeted Indian villages and posts with heavy gunfire and mortar shells along the line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday.

Indian troops retaliated to the latest ceasefire violation that started around 7.15am and continued till 11am, a defence spokespers­on said.

“There is heavy cross-border mortar shelling in Poonch, Qasba, Kerni, Shahpur, Gulpur and Banvat Top,” an official at the police control room in Poonch told Hindustan Times.

He identified the dead as nineyear-old Israr Ahmed from Qasba Kerni and 15-year-old Yasmin Akhtar, a resident of Bagial Dara.

Three of the injured, including a young girl, were critical, the police official said.

Deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh told a news wire that Pakistan was a country of cowards.

“Pakistan is a country of cowards. On one hand, they show white flags and on other, target civilians,” he added.

“Our Indian army is retaliatin­g. In coming days, we will soon teach a good lesson to the terror country Pakistan,” he told a news wire in Jammu.
