NEW DELHI: The faculty at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other centrally funded institutes will get a pay hike after the Centre’s decision to review their salaries by taking into account recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission (CPC).

A senior human resource development (HRD) ministry official said that the salary structure is likely to see an increase of over 16%-20% and faculty members would see an increase of between ₹20,000 and ₹40,000 per month, depending on their position and scale.

“The pay of the directors of IITs/IIMs/IISc (Indian Institute of Science)/IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research)/NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering), whose pay scale in the Sixth Seventh Central Pay Commission (CPC) was ₹80,000 (fixed), shall only be fixed at level 17 i.e. ₹2,25,000 and pay in respect of all other directors who were on the existing pay scales of ₹75,000 + ₹5,000 (special allowance) shall be fixed at ₹2,10,000 (fixed),” states the circular issued by the ministry.

Sources said that the ministry, in the circular, has also asked institutes “to put in place a process for discontinuation of non-performers”.

“Some of the faculty members in these institutes are hired on contractual basis for three years and their performance will be assessed.

Naturally, those who don’t perform will be asked to mend their ways or leave,” said a source.

The hike will be retrospective which means the revised pay and rates of dearness allowance will be applied for from January 1, 2016.

The last pay hike for teachers was implemented in 2006. Several teachers’ associations of various universities and colleges have been threatening to go on strike over the delay in implementation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission (CPC)
