Western Railways women crowned hockey champion

JALANDHAR : Holders Western Railways, Mumbai, retained the title for the second consecutiv­e time defeating Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, 2-1 in the 34th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament’s women section final at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.

The winning team bagged a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, sponsored by Hardeep Singh Kular (UK), while runners-up team pocketed ₹75,000, which was sponsored by Innocent Heart Group.

CRPF team got fair play trophy.

In the women’s final, it was in the 16th minute that Western Railways’s Sarita B scored a field goal, dodging past two defenders, to give her side a 1-0 lead.

In the 18th minute, RCF girls equalised with Lalruatfel­i converting a penalty corner. At half time, both teams were locked 1-1.

In the second half’s 40th minute Western Railways’s Preeti Dubay scored the field goal to complete the tally (2-1).

Chief guest Anita Punj, IG Director, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, and Punjab Hockey general secretary and MLA Pargat Singh gave away the prizes.

PUNJAB & SIND BANK ENTER SEMIS

Punjab & Sind Bank will take on ONGC, Delhi, and Punjab Police will face Indian Oil, Mumbai, in the semifinals of the men’s section on Monday.

Today in the last league match, Punjab & Sind Bank beat Air India, Mumbai, 4-3.

Punjab & Sind Bank earned four points from two outings with one draw against CAG and one win against Air India.
