4 employees injured in Panipat oil refinery pipe leak, two critical

MISHAP Leakage occurs in IOC refinery’s coker unit; 2 workers, who suffered 80% burns, referred to Delhi’s Safdarjang Hospital

KARNAL :At least four people sustained burn injuries, with two of them critical, after a leakage in a steam pipe in the coker unit of the Indian Oil Corporatio­n (IOC) refinery in Panipat.

The injured have been identified as production manager Pradeep Kumar and contractua­l workers Jaspreet Singh, Ankit Kumar and Anil Kumar.

Reports said Jaspreet and Anil received around 80% burns and they were referred to Delhi’s Safdarjang Hospital and their condition was critical.

Ankit and Pradeep, who received about 35 and 15 per cent burns, were admitted to a local hospital and their condition was stable. The officials said that the incident took place on Friday when the employees were working in the refinery.

The injured Ankit said they were working in the coker unit to crack coal with steam but the hot water pipe got leaked following a blast. As they could not control the bursts of hot water they ended up sustaining burns.

Water splashed all over Jaspreet and Anil, who were working right below the water plant, he said.

‘INJURED GIVEN TIMELY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE’

Refinery’s corporate communi- cations chief manager DC Verma said the injured were given medical assistance immediatel­y and a panel was set up by the management to investigat­e what led to the incident.

The Panipat police have started investigat­ions into the incident and recorded the statements of the injured employees.
