Man, son booked for slaughtering cow in Gurgaon, 90-kg beef seized

GURGAON: Two people were booked for alleged cow slaughter in Mewat under the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gau Samvardhan Act 2015 as well sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act on Thursday.

The police recovered 90 kilograms of beef from the accused, who managed to escape, the police said.

According to the police, 90 kg of beef was recovered and a cow was found slaughtered in Devla Nagli village under Jaisinghpur police post, which falls under Nuh police station.

The police identified the accused, a father-son duo, as Jaipal and Shakti, respectively. Both are residents of the village and are absconding.

According to the police, they received information about cow slaughter from local villagers.

“We conducted a raid in the village based on a tip-off. The two accused managed to flee the spot and investigation is ongoing to trace them,” a police officer said.

“We have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gau Samvardhan Act, 2015, as well sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” the officer said.

On November 6, seven people were booked for allegedly selling beef biryani in Mewat.

Following the incident, Mewat police are in the process of identifying the source of beef.

On August 24, 2016, the animal husbandry department and police authorities had collected seven samples of biryani from shopkeepers and vendors in the Muslim-dominated area of Mundaka village, 85 kilometres from Gurgaon, in Mewat. The incident had led to widespread outrage.

A case was lodged on the order of the court of subdivisional judicial magistrate who had on October 13 ordered the police to investigate and take action on the matter.

Naresh Kadyan, the chairman of People for Animals, Haryana, had moved the court the same day seeking action on the issue.

Implemented in March 2016, the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gau Samvardhan Act, 2015, makes cow slaughter punishable with rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine of Rs1 lakh.
