HYDERABAD: Mitra, a humanoid robot developed by Bengalurub­ased Invento Robotics, greeted Ivanka Trump and PM Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad Convention Centre (HICC) here.

Mitra greeted the leaders with a folded-hand “namaste” and welcomed them. It also announced the inaugurati­on of after Modi and Ivanka pressed the buttons on their respective country’s flags. The robot, named after the Vedic god of friendship, is a poster child for cooperatio­n in artificial intelligen­ce between India and China.

Another version, capable of speech and face recognitio­n and interactiv­e gestures, welcomes customers at the Canara Bank in Bengaluru. Mitra is designed to be an “indoor autonomous robot” or one that can be deployed in offices, hospitals and even multiplex cinemas. “The computer-aided designing has been done in India. Its plastic mould is being made in a factory in Dongguan and the printed circuit boards and motor controls are being manufactur­ed in Shenzhen (both in south China),” Balaji Viswanatha­n, one of the founders of Invento Robotics, had told HT on September 20, a year after the company was launched.
