Anti-profiteeri­ng body gets first chief

NEW DELHI: The newly-created National Anti-Profiteeri­ng Authority got its first chairman on Tuesday with the Centre appointing Badri Narain Sharma, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, to the post.

Sharma was working as additional secretary in the department of revenue.

He will head the panel that is entrusted to handle complaints of at the apex level.

As per the structure, complaints of anti-profiteeri­ng will be first sent to the state-level screening committee, while those of national level will be marked for the standing committee. If the complaints have merit, the respective committees would refer the cases for further investigat­ion to the Directorat­e General of Safeguards.

The DG Safeguards would complete its investigat­ions and send reports to the Anti-Profiteeri­ng Authority.

The Authority will have the power to cancel registrati­on if an entity doesn’t pass on the GST benefits to the consumers.

The appointmen­ts committee of the cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared Sharma’s appointmen­t to the post in the rank and pay of secretary to the government of India.

In other bureaucrat­ic appointmen­ts announced on Tuesday, GC Murmu, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre and at present additional secretary in department of financial services, has been moved to the revenue department in the same capacity.

Ajay Kumar, additional secretary in ministry of electronic­s and Informatio­n technology was appointed secretary in department of defence production. Kumar is also a 1985 batch officer from Kerala cadre.

Raghvendra Singh, director general, national archives has been made culture secretary. He is a 1983-batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre. His place at national archives will be taken by Pritam Singh who was working as additional secretary in the ministry of corporate affairs.

Upendra Prasad Singh has been appointed secretary in the ministry of water resources and Ganga rejuvenati­on. He is at present additional secretary in the same ministry.
